Girls: Taliyah Brisco aims for the next level
As the Class of 2016 are celebrating graduation and the fact that they will be moving onto college soon it's rare at this point to find a quality player with excellent academics still on the board, but the head scratching case of 5'6" guard Taliyah Brisco (Francis Lewis '16) shows that even a top quality, championship player can be overlooked by college coaches.
The Francis Lewis starting point guard for 3 years now, Brisco averaged 12 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds a game as a senior in leading her Lady Patriots team to the PSAL Championship Game. She was a big part of the reason Francis Lewis won the title during her sophomore year as well. Truly, Brisco has done everything right as she was even an impact player for Positive Direction on the AAU circuit over the past 3 summers.
So what's the issue? There really aren't any, it's just the unfortunate situation of a player being overlooked and while she tries to keep a positive attitude about the situation she is in, Brisco did admit that it can be rough on her sometimes not knowing how her plans yet for September.
"Sometimes it's tough and it can be emotional and stressful because you have worked so hard for so long and I still kind of have nothing," Brisco said after an impressive Rose Classic season.
She does have a couple of bites at this point with Brisco stating that Monroe College in Rochester is very interested, while Wilmington University in Delaware also would love to have her. Post University in Connecticut has come on as of late too but it's a decision that Brisco says she really struggles with because she wants to be sure she will be truly happy at that school over the next four years.
"It's a tough decision because you want to do what's best for you and go where you will be most comfortable because this is going to be your life for four years," Brisco explained.
Having already visited Monroe, and with a visit to Wilmington soon to come, Brisco hopes a decision will come sooner than later, and she is still open to other schools interested who might want a floor general, a leader, and a winner.
There are so many different aspects of the game that Brisco cane bring to a program that wherever she ends up that school and team will be much better off, and while it can be frustrating to not have the looks she deserves from schools, that is just something she will put in her memory bank for when she sees them again on the court.
"I am just going to play as hard as I can for whatever program I do go to. I promise I will make the coach happy and do whatever I can do to help us get wins, and when I play teams that I think should've recruited me I will definitely take it out on them. That to me is the best mentality to have."
No doubt there will definitely be a number of schools who will regret not going after Brisco as she certainly will be a difference maker for the lucky college program that lands her.
