New York’s Class of 2020: Ready to Takeover

While the College coaches at Hoop Group Buzzer Beater Classic in Neptune, NJ primarily focused on the Classes of 2016 and 2017, there was one team that played in the 15U division that featured players from the Class of 2020. The PSA Cardinals 2020 team coached Sean Adams is already a force to be reckoned with.

With 90% of the team only heading to the 9th grade, the PSA Cardinals 2020 were playing by participating in the 15U Division. However, in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday, it would be the Jersey Shore traffic that would be the ultimate nemesis. “It was the beach traffic on Garden State,” said Coach Adams. “Most of our guys weren’t here until half time.”

Playing against a season Jersey Force team, the Cardinals found themselves down by 9 points at the half. The deficit would’ve been more severe had it not been for 5’11” SG Jaylen Murray (Wings Academy ’20). “He was already here so he held the fort down,” said Adams which he said prevented the Cardinals from being down by 12 – 15 points.

Reinforcements arrived at the half and the PSA Cardinals made a run paced by 6’4” SG/SF Brandon Weston (St. John's Northwestern Military Academy '20 ). “He’s like a baby man-child,” said Coach Adams. “He can kill you on the inside. He can kill you on the outside.” Already able to finish with either hand, Adams said the 14-year-old just needs to work on his footwork a bit.

Speedy Carcamon

The PSA Cardinals came from behind and took a one-point lead with 9 minute still left to play. Another main reason for the second half resurgence was the play of 5’8” point guard Abdias “Speedy” Carcamo (Archbishop Molloy ’20). “Speedy is one of those guys that you always need to have. He can control the tempo at any time. He doesn’t turn the ball over much,” Adams explained.

Another player, Coach Adams credits for the team’s second have resurgence is the aggressive play of 5’11” PG Jalin Sinclair (Suffield Academy ’20).

Jersey Force would ultimately prevail, 58-54 as the combination of rushed start and the energy expended for the comeback eventually took its toll. To their credit the PSA Cardinals finished 2-1, bouncing back to sweep Team Charlotte East, 54-45, on Saturday and the DC Blue Devils 2020, 53-48, on Sunday.
